Two of the most popular agile methodologies are Kanban and Scrum. Both can help teams deliver better software, but they take different approaches.
Understanding Scrum
Scrum is built around fixed-length sprints, usually 2 weeks. Teams commit to a specific amount of work at the start of each sprint and work to complete it by the end.
Understanding Kanban
Kanban focuses on continuous flow. Work moves through stages (like To Do, In Progress, Done) with limits on how much can be in progress at once.
When to Choose Scrum
Scrum works well when you have dedicated teams, predictable work, and stakeholders who can wait for sprint boundaries to see progress.
When to Choose Kanban
Kanban is better for teams with unpredictable work, support teams, or when you need to respond quickly to changing priorities.
The Hybrid Approach
Many teams combine elements of both—using Kanban boards with sprint planning, for example. The best methodology is the one your team will actually use.
